Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, expressed that he is not overly concerned about the challenges of selecting the starting lineup for the match against Mozambique on Monday.
These concerns arose after some less frequently utilized players excelled in the game against Uganda during their last Group C match.
Chelle emphasized that the players' performances during training will ultimately determine who will start in the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 match against Mozambique.
In the previous group stage match against the Cranes, Chelle made several adjustments and provided four players with their first opportunity in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The players who debuted were Ryan Alebiosu, Igoh Ogbu, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Salim Lawal. Additionally, players such as Paul Onuachu, Francis Uzoho, Raphael Onyedika, and Chidozie Awaziem were also given a chance to prove themselves for a spot in the starting lineup.
When asked during the press conference prior to the Monday match if their recent performances had complicated his selection for the game against the Mambas, the Malian coach stated that there will always be a solution.
“We reviewed the three games from the group stage, but the training session is the most crucial aspect,” he said.
“The training session is more significant to me because it reflects on the group. If a player performs well in training, they may earn the opportunity to play.
“That’s why I consistently mention that we are focused on our game strategy and our training sessions. I hope for a successful game tomorrow.”
Nigeria advanced to the Round of 16 by winning all their group matches and securing a total of nine points. The Super Eagles triumphed over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.
