In anticipation of the December 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), former Ghanaian international Asamoah Gyan has identified three leading contenders for the trophy.

He believes that Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and the host nation, Morocco, are emerging as frontrunners.

Gyan made these remarks during the CAF Awards held in Morocco on Wednesday night.

The former striker expressed his disappointment regarding his country's failure to qualify for the continental tournament.

“We have several strong teams participating. Ghana is out, which is disappointing, but we will qualify for the World Cup,” he stated.

Gyan, who captained the Black Stars for many years, pointed out that Nigeria performed exceptionally well at the last AFCON in Côte d'Ivoire.

“Nigeria did well; they came close in the last two years. Ivory Coast has also shown strong performance, and we have many capable teams,” he mentioned.

“Morocco is another formidable contender that is performing well. So, I would say the three countries I have highlighted—Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Morocco—are the ones to watch,” he added.

Nigeria lost the final of the previous AFCON to the host nation, Ivory Coast, in a match that concluded with a score of 2-1.
