Published on May 31, 2025 at 07:55 AM

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission said electricity customers within the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company franchise received a N28.99 billion monthly electricity subsidy.

This was disclosed in NERC’s Multi-Year-Tariff Order for AEDC in May, 2025.

NERC explained that the electricity subsidy allowed tariffs for Bands B-E customers have been frozen since 2022.

This means that AEDC electricity customers under Band B-E pay less than N209 perkilowatt-hour due to existing electricity subsidies.

“In line with the policy direction of the FGN on electricity subsidy, the allowed tariffs For Bands B—E, customer categories shall remain frozen at the rates payable since December 2022, subject to further policy direction by the government. With this policy, the estimated subsidy benefit for customers under the AEDC franchise in 2025 is approximately N28.99 billion monthly,”; the NERC order released on May 21, 2025, stated.

In the May order, NERC also stated that it approved N1.69 billion from the total annual OpEx of AEDC as being 10 percent of the overbilled amount by AEDC for the period covering May—September 2023.

Recall that in 2024 AEDC announced 107 Band A feeders with customers paying N209 per kilowatt-hour electricity bill. However, as oftoday, DAILY POST reports that most electricity customers of AEDC have been upgraded to Band A.
