The Abia State Government has established an administrative panel of inquiry to investigate the causes of the conflict in the Okun Aku community, located in the Ohafia local government area.
DAILY POST recalls that a young man, Mr. Igwe Akuma Akwu, was shot and killed last week, while several houses and vehicles belonging to other residents of Okun-Aku were set on fire during the unrest.
A public notice announcing the formation of the inquiry panel was signed by the Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs,
Uzor Nwachukwu.
According to the notice, the panel was approved by Governor Alex Otti due to concerns regarding both the underlying and immediate causes of the conflict, as well as the need to identify individuals or groups involved in escalating the situation.
The panel will be chaired by Justice K. O. Nwosu, Rtd, and its members will include Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (Rtd), the Governor's Special Adviser on Security, Mrs. Charity Okeagu, who will serve as the Panel’s Secretary, and others such as Obinna Chimbuo from the Abia State Ministry of Justice; Eze Kalu Ogbu; Eze Franklin Nwosu; and Mr. Ahamefula George, Head of Service for the Ohafia local government.
The panel is expected to begin its proceedings immediately and aims to submit its report within four weeks.
The Commissioner has urged residents of the Okun Aku community, stakeholders, and concerned citizens to fully cooperate with the panel by providing valuable information that will help restore peace to the area.
