Three Israeli soldiers were injured by mortar shells fired from across Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, the Israel Defense Forces said Monday.
“Overnight, a number of mortar shell launches from Lebanon toward IDF posts in the area of Shtula were identified. As a result, three IDF soldiers were lightly injured and evacuated to receive medical treatment,” the IDF said.
Later, more shells were fired toward an IDF post in the area of Yiftah, a kibbutz in northern Israel, the IDF said. “In response, IDF artillery struck the sources of the fire,” the IDF said.
Clashes at Israel’s border with Lebanon have raised fears of a wider regional conflict.
Hezbollah — an Iran-backed armed group that is also a regional force in its own right — dominates southern Lebanon. It also operates alongside Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Corps in Syria, where the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights separates Israel from Tehran-aligned fighters.
