The Edo State Government has reported that at least 25 individuals were impacted by the fuel tanker explosion that occurred on December 17, 2025, in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.

According to DAILY POST, Jerry Idahosa, the Head of the State Emergency Management Agency (EDOSEMA), revealed this information during a visit to the area by a state government delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the State Governor, Alhaji Gani Audu.

Idahosa mentioned that 16 of the victims are currently receiving treatment at Auchi General Hospital and Amazing Grace Hospital.

He also noted that several shops, four trucks, and motorbikes were destroyed in the incident.

Earlier, Alhaji Gani Audu, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, stated that the delegation was in Auchi on behalf of the state government to express sympathy for the community and conduct an on-site assessment of the situation.

“We received a clear mandate from the governor upon learning of this incident to promptly come to Auchi to demonstrate solidarity, extend our condolences to the victims, and ascertain the details of what transpired,” he stated.

He added that the delegation had visited the site of the fire and the hospitals where the victims were admitted, indicating that a comprehensive report would be submitted to the governor to inform long-term preventive measures.

While expressing gratitude that no lives were lost, he stated that with the firsthand information gathered, the team would report back to the governor to implement measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.

Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Festus Ebea, who was also part of the delegation, expressed his condolences to the victims and attributed the incident in part to the poor condition of the Auchi–Okene expressway leading to Jattu junction.

“The undulating nature of this road poses significant dangers. We urgently need remedial work to prevent future incidents. Historical records indicate that several trucks have experienced difficulties here,” he added.

Ebea assured that the state government would cover the medical expenses for the victims at the hospitals.

He also cautioned residents against attempting to collect fuel from fallen tankers, emphasizing that Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) is highly flammable.

“If you see fuel spilling, evacuate the area immediately. Even a minor static charge can ignite a fire. This is critical advice for everyone,” he warned.
