2027: PDP has incurable virus, not an option – Babachir Lawal

Published on May 21, 2025 at 01:53 PM

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has ruled out the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a viable platform for the emerging opposition coalition gearing up for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Wednesday, Lawal revealed that the coalition’s stakeholders are exploring the possibility of either registering a new political party or adopting and restructuring an existing one. However, he made it clear that the PDP is not under consideration due to what he described as a deep-rooted and irreparable dysfunction within the party.

“In all the meetings I’ve attended so far, nobody has ever considered adopting the PDP. We all agree that PDP has an incurable virus. No antibiotics can cure what is ailing the PDP,”;; he stated.

Lawal also disclosed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is playing an active role in the coalition’s formation, alongside other prominent politicians determined to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.

His comments further fuel speculation that Atiku may be preparing to exit the PDP, which has been embroiled in internal leadership crises since its loss in the 2023 presidential election. The ongoing dispute over the position of national secretary—between Sunday Ude-Okoye and Samuel Anyanwu—has intensified the party’s woes.

Lawal assured Nigerians that the coalition will soon unveil its political platform, a move intended to provide clarity and direction for supporters eager for a unified opposition front.
