The National Orientation Agency (NOA) of Kebbi State, along with the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), has urged political parties to avoid hate speech, misinformation, and political violence that could threaten peace in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
This appeal was made during a joint session with IPAC members focused on “Mitigating Hate Speech and Political Bitterness for Peaceful and Inclusive Elections.”
Speaking at the event, NOA Kebbi State Director Mohammad Nasir Karofi highlighted the increasing use of social media to provoke citizens through misleading videos and biased narratives.
“The observations are alarming: a growing wave of negativity and division driven by irresponsible language,” Karofi stated. “The pre-campaign phase is essential for reflection and self-control. Increasing hostility now jeopardizes a stable, issue-oriented democratic culture and diminishes trust within communities.”
He called on political leaders to rein in their members, foster mutual respect, and comply with legal standards. Karofi stressed that parties should concentrate on internal organization, policy discussions, and civic engagement without resorting to slander or inflammatory remarks.
“Political leaders must inform their supporters about the risks of propaganda and the necessity of verifying information. Remaining silent in the face of misinformation equates to complicity,” he added.
IPAC State Chairman Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammad praised NOA for this initiative and promised the council's full backing.
Representatives from the state’s major political parties also voiced their opinions. PDP’s Haruna Jega affirmed that his party supports peace, does not tolerate hate speech or violence, and encouraged viewing opposing voices as constructive feedback. APC’s Nasiru Mogaji denounced the dissemination of false and biased content on social media, cautioning that it could mislead citizens beyond the state’s borders.
