After posing a variety of questions, four players reached the 1% question, with £99,000 available as a prize.
However, Lee announced that in a twist to the regular format – due to it being Christmas – they would all share £10,000 that is typically offered at that stage of the game.
This meant they had nothing to lose by continuing and attempting to answer the 1% question.
He then presented the question: “In the words below, which animal appears twice before a mouse does?”
The four players were shown the opening lines of the poem, A Visit From St. Nicholas.
Although the title of the poem by Clement Clarke Moore may not be widely recognized, the lines certainly are.
They read: “’Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.”
As time expired, Lee asked each of the players to reveal their answers.
The first woman stated she had written ‘hen’, while the second confessed she had not written anything.
The third contestant said she had written ‘dog’, and the fourth lady also mentioned ‘hen’.
Lee then revealed that the correct answer was ‘hen’, found at the end of ‘the’ and the beginning of ‘night’, and then in the word ‘when’.
This meant that two out of the four women playing had won the jackpot, splitting the £99,000 to take home an impressive Christmas gift of £49,500 each.
The Christmas Special aired shortly after the show’s first Rollover Week.
It culminated in a player winning the entire £100,000 jackpot.
