A regional organization based in Adamawa State, the Gongola Peoples Forum, recently celebrated the first anniversary of five chiefdoms and two emirates established in the state in December of last year.
On Saturday, the Forum gathered cultural groups from across Adamawa State, as well as from neighboring Gombe, Taraba, Bauchi, and other states within Nigeria’s Middle Belt Zone for what it called the ‘Gongola Peoples Fiesta,’ which turned into a tribute to the seven chiefdoms and emirates.
The Forum, composed of various ethnic nationalities aiming to establish their identities distinct from the predominant Hausa-Fulani influence, drew leaders who unanimously praised the formation of the newly established Hoba, Madagali, Michika, Gombi, and Dumne chiefdoms, in addition to the Fufore and Maiha emirates.
The seven entities were created in December 2024 by the Adamawa State Government after several decades of being part of the formerly extensive Adamawa Emirate or Mubi Emirate.
During the Gongola Peoples Grand Cultural Fiesta held at the Mahmud Ribadu Square in Yola, the event's chairman, retired General Paul Tarfa, stated, “My dear indigenous ethnic nationalities, you have gathered here today to celebrate and express gratitude to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri for establishing seven emirates and chiefdoms.”
Tarfa encouraged the large audience to embrace their “air of freedom” as they enjoyed their dance.
In a speech delivered on behalf of the paramount rulers of the seven new chiefdoms and emirates, the paramount ruler of the Hoba Chiefdom, the Tol Hoba, Dr. Alheri Nyako, remarked that the event was a significant occasion of joy and appreciation for the seven traditional institutions, thanking the government for establishing these institutions.
The Adamawa State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Alphonsus Babadoke, who represented Governor Ahmadu Fintiri at the event, expressed gratitude to the Gongola Peoples Forum for their support of the government's decision to create these traditional institutions.
