A MAJOR airport which is one of the world’s busiest is set to close for good in the next decade.

(DXB) will be closing forever, with all of its flights moved to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) around 22 miles away.

All operations at the airport will be relocated to the new airport – which has been open since 2010 with commercial flights since 2013 – between 2032 and 2035.

The boss of Dubai International Airport, Mr Griffiths spoke at the Arabian Travel Market conference and said: “We will move every single service to DWC.”

Dubai International Airport will most likely be redeveloped to “spread the city out”, according to Mr Griffiths.

He added: “The economics of keeping DXB open will not really be possible to do unless we invest a huge amount of money.”

The decision is part of a £25.8billion expansion project at as Dubai International Airport has reached its limit.

The current airport cannot expand anymore due to houses and highways in the surrounding area.

In comparison, Al Maktoum International Airport will become the biggest airport in the world, with five runways, 400 gates and the ability to handle up to 260million passengers each year by 2057.

Dubai International Airport currently handles more than 90million passengers per year.

Major airlines such as and flydubai are expected to move their hubs to the new airport.

The new airport will also boast a 30-minute highspeed train to Abu Dhabi.
