Former world champion Chris Billam-Smith believes that the matchup between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua should be considered ILLEGAL, despite acknowledging that the YouTube sensation brings value to the sport of boxing.

is set for a professionally sanctioned heavyweight bout, scheduled for eight rounds.

The only limitation has left ex-cruiserweight champion Billam-Smith concerned for Paul.

In an interview with SunSport, he stated: “It’s business, right? They’re going to make a lot of money, and that’s often how things work in this industry.

“While it is primarily a business, it is also a legitimate fight, and I’m not entirely sure it should be legal, to be honest.

“Given the size difference, the disparity in skill levels, and the variation in experience, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.”

Paul, 28, boasts a record of 12 wins and only one loss, having suffered a split-decision defeat to Tommy Fury, 26, in 2023.

His most recent fight was a victory over former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., 39, in June.

However, Paul’s most significant contribution to the sport has occurred outside the ring, where he has worked to enhance opportunities for women in boxing.

Two of Billam-Smith’s training partners, Ellie Scotney and Caroline Dubois, have benefited from his efforts.

Billam-Smith, who is currently in Miami to support Dubois on Paul’s undercard, remarked: “I’ve always respected him; he seems to put in the work.

“Regardless of how long he’s been boxing, he trains like a professional. He’s not detrimental to the sport at all; in fact, he brings substantial business to it.

“He draws attention to the sport and has done remarkable things for women, including supporting my two friends, Ellie and Caroline.

“Both are signed with Jake Paul and MVP. He’s making significant contributions and truly puts in the effort. That deserves respect.”

Billam-Smith, 35, has been inactive since his victory over American Brandon Glanton, 33, in April.

He mentioned: “At the moment, I’m just staying active and preparing. We’ll be ready to compete in the new year.

“We’re looking at champions like Jai Opetaia and Zurdo Ramirez, who is set to fight David Benavidez—a fantastic matchup.

“I believe the only one who might have an issue with this is Opetaia, as he’s seeking unification.

“All the champions are in play, and I might need to have a fight in between, but I’ll be ready in the new year.”
