The Presidency has announced that President Bola Tinubu will not interfere with the operations of anti-corruption agencies in light of corruption allegations against Farouk Ahmed, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Ahmed recently stepped down from his position at NMDPRA following corruption claims made against him by Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Industries Limited.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, in a statement on X on Thursday, emphasized that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are independent entities and will operate according to their legal responsibilities.
Onanuga made these comments in a post on X, responding to public criticism regarding the lack of arrests or announced investigations following Ahmed’s resignation.
An X user, @OurFavOnlineDoc, specifically questioned the absence of prosecution or investigation, arguing that a resignation alone does not constitute accountability.
“No prosecution. No arrest. No investigation. No proper accountability.
Just allegations of misappropriating public funds, followed by a quiet resignation, and everyone can move on.
This is not how to foster a sane country with trust, integrity, and respect on the global stage. What a disgrace,” he stated.
However, Onanuga dismissed the criticism as misinformed, emphasizing that the President cannot instruct the EFCC or ICPC on how to manage such situations.
“This is how we misstep through uninformed criticism. ICPC and EFCC are independent institutions. The responsibility now lies with them to fulfill their mandates. The President will not dictate their actions,” Onanuga asserted.
