Former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad has expressed his disapproval of a move by United States Senator Ted Cruz aimed at halting Sharia laws in Nigeria.
According to DAILY POST, Cruz shared a post on X in response to Nigeria’s designation by President Donald Trump, which involves “targeting those who enforce blasphemy and Sharia laws in Nigeria.”
However, Bashir, who served as media aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, was incensed by the post and questioned why the US Senator would focus on those who implement Sharia law in Nigeria.
He argued that the lawmaker lacks the authority to challenge Sharia law in Nigeria, asserting that the country will “defend” its sovereignty.
He stated, “So a US senator is now boldly announcing they will target those who have helped implement Sharia law in Nigeria, as if practicing or supporting Sharia is a criminal act.
“You are welcome to oppose Sharia in your own country, but you do not have the jurisdiction to impose your views on our laws.
“We will protect our sovereignty and our right to govern our own legal matters.”
