Legendary Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, has stated that Arne Slot "destroyed" his Liverpool team by signing Florian Wirtz during the summer transfer window.
The Reds invested over £400 million on new players after Slot secured the Premier League title in his inaugural season.
Due to these acquisitions, many analysts anticipated that Liverpool would emerge as one of the strongest teams in the league.
However, the defending champions have already played six matches across all competitions and find themselves seven points behind the new title favorites, Arsenal.
Recently, Slot's squad has shown some improvement, winning against Aston Villa in the league, followed by a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Nevertheless, Wenger has raised concerns about the decision to disrupt a title-winning midfield by bringing in Wirtz.
“Liverpool is an intriguing case,” Wenger remarked on beIN SPORTS.
“When Wirtz had the opportunity to choose between Bayern Munich and Liverpool, he told Liverpool, ‘I will join you if I play as a No. 10; I do not want to play on the wing.’ Liverpool agreed to this condition to secure him.”
“As a result, they started him, which disrupted their midfield structure. Their midfield originally consisted of [Ryan] Gravenberch, [Alexis] Mac Allister, and [Dominik] Szoboszlai, but to accommodate Wirtz, they removed Szoboszlai from the lineup.”
