The East Wing of the official presidential residence has featured an underground vault since the 1940s.
The original nuclear vault – formally known as the Presidential Emergency Operations Centre – was built after Pearl Harbour.
But the East Wing was razed last year to make way for the controversial $400million ballroom project which is being funded privately by Trump and other donors.
“The military is building a massive complex under the ballroom, and that’s under construction, and we’re doing very well,” Trump said.
“We have all bullet-proof glass, we have drone-proof roofs, ceilings.
“Unfortunately, we’re living in an age when that’s a good thing.”
Trump showed off illustrations for his 90,000 square foot ballroom which he described as essentially a “shed” for the underground bunker.
He added: “The glass on the windows is extremely thick – it’s high-grade glass.”
The President said of the bunker had “come out come out recently because of a stupid lawsuit that was filed.”
Last year, the Secret Service warned delays or halts in the construction of the ballroom would pose “national security concern”, according to court documents.
in October last year.
Trump has insisted a ballroom of this scale has been sought for 150 years and that the existing 200-person capacity room is too small.
The ballroom will be the biggest structural change to the Executive Mansion since the addition of the Truman Balcony overlooking the South Lawn in 1948, even dwarfing the building itself.
He said he wasn’t the only president to want it to impress dignitaries “like President Xi of “.
“We have very small rooms that are not big enough to handle the kind of capacity that you need.
“This [the ballroom] is the same height as the – it’s an incredible fitting. I think it’ll be the finest ballroom of its kind anywhere in the world.”
He revealed the plans on Air Force One because he was “so busy” for a different kind of announcement.
“I don’t have time to do this. . But this is important because this is going to be with us for a long time,” he said.

The president has steam-rolled ahead with the project – tearing down walls and collapsing windows – despite not receiving planning approval.
Dramatic photos of the demolition work showed a backhoe tearing into the facade and windows and other building parts in tatters on the ground.
Trump previously mentioned the construction in a social media post but insisted only part of the building would be touched.
He said: “It won’t interfere with the current building,’ the president said at the time.
“It’ll be near it, but not touching it and pays total respect to the existing building, which I’m the biggest fan of. It’s my favourite.”
