President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, as the Director of Public Prosecutions in the Federal Ministry of Justice.
A letter dated December 23 and signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission confirmed that Oyedepo’s transfer from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to the mainstream Federal Civil Service was made in the public interest.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House, Abiodun Oladunjoye, Oyedepo will succeed Abubakar Babadoko, who is set to retire on December 31, 2025, after fulfilling the mandatory eight years in the director role.
The statement further noted, “Mr. Oyedepo is a 2007 Law graduate from the University of Ilorin and attended the Law School in 2008.
“He is expected to utilize his expertise to decrease the reliance on external counsel for critical prosecutions and to ensure greater coherence and consistency in the Federal Government’s legal strategies.”
“Prior to this appointment, Mr. Oyedepo worked at the EFCC for over 15 years, specializing in the prosecution of complex economic and financial crimes. He also held the position of Head of the Monitoring Unit.”
“Among other responsibilities, he was a member of the legal team representing the Federal Government in the landmark case of Process and Industrial Development vs The Federal Republic of Nigeria, commonly referred to as the P&ID case.
“He was recognized as the EFCC Outstanding Staff of the Year in 2014 and received the award for Best Financial Crimes Prosecutor in 2019.”
