“List your designs first on TikTok Shop so that you have several items in your shop when people go to your shop.
“Make some easy videos. Lay some shirts out nicely, do some video posts.
“Use the affiliates, do some open collaborations where anyone can buy your shirts and promote them.
“I reached out to affiliates that were in my market and so then I had people sharing my post and I was able to grow pretty quickly by just doing those things.”
April then revealed the advice she was given that she can’t stress enough – “get in there and make mistakes.”
The advised: “It’s going to be nerve-wracking, you’re going to be really nervous at first, but just be super genuine and super honest and let your customers know, “this is my first time, I’m new, I don’t really know what I’m doing,’ and people more often than not are very kind and they want to help you.”
Top tips for starting a business
SUSIE Ma, the founder of Tropic, has shared her advice on how to start a business.
Get obsessively clear on who you’re serving
Susie said: “Before you launch anything, zoom right in on the person you’re building for. What do they already buy that’s “good enough”? What are they frustrated by? And what would genuinely make them switch?
“When I built Tropic, it was never about being “another option” – it had to deliver real results and stand for something people could trust. If you can’t clearly answer “why you?”, growth will always feel like a push.”
Use social media – but don’t rely on it. Build the long way that lasts
Susie stressed: “Social can be brilliant, but it’s often the harder route than people realise. Algorithms change, attention is rented, and it’s easy to confuse views with traction.
“When I started Tropic, social media wasn’t there to accelerate anything, so I built the old-school way: person by person, product in hand, conversation by conversation. I listened obsessively, improved fast, and earned trust.
“That’s still the secret. Use social to share your story and bring people behind the scenes – but build your business on advocacy. Start with 10 people you can truly wow. Then 50. Then 500. Because virality fades, but belief compounds.”
Bake purpose into the business model, not the marketing
The entrepreneur advised: “Purpose can’t be a bolt-on. It has to show up in the decisions nobody sees: ingredients, packaging, supply chain, how you treat people, what you say no to.
“When it’s woven in from day one, it becomes your decision filter and your trust engine – and customers can feel the difference.”
Use AI to buy back your time (so you can stay creative)
A trick you won’t want to miss, Susie explained: “In the early days, time is your most expensive resource.
“Use AI like a second brain – to organise, draft, plan, summarise, and strip out the admin that drains momentum.
“Not to replace the human magic. To protect it, so you can focus on quality, creativity, and the choices only you can make.”
Spend that saved time on real human connection
Not only this, but Susie explained: “At the start, personal touches are your unfair advantage. Thoughtful replies. Handwritten notes. Remembering names. Overdelivering when no one expects it.
“You won’t be able to do it at scale forever, but those early relationships often become your strongest advocates – and that loyalty is priceless.”
There’s no “right” age – only the moment you decide to back yourself
Finally, if you want to succeed, Susie concluded: “You don’t need permission or perfection. You need belief, action, and momentum.
“Confidence usually comes after you start, not before. Begin where you are, learn as you go, and keep moving – that’s how real businesses are built.”
As well as this, April highlighted her top three selling tips for those eager to be successful on TikTok Live.
Firstly, she explained: “Be really genuine – don’t be too salesy. People want to relate to you.”
Secondly, she suggested: “Thank your people for their purchases. One, it shows them that you’re thankful and grateful for them supporting your , and two, people like to have their name called out in real time, they want to be acknowledged for their purchase.”
Finally, April said: “Three, use your tools. You have to use the giveaways, the , coupons, buy more save more – use all the tools that TikTok is giving you.”
Reflecting on her business journey, April observed: “There was one point where my baby was three-months-old and me, my husband, Prim was 10 at the time, and my mother were all in my living room trying to make T-shirts for a giant order that we had and we needed to get it out on time.”
To conclude, April expressed: “I wanted to stay home with my children, I didn’t want a warehouse – I with my children and a laptop.”
