WELCOME to this weekly column by TEMPLEGATE (Steve Mullen) where he pinpoints horses to follow from the past week or two and takes a first look at big races to come.

Let’s give the bookies a right good kicking!

KING ROLY 12-1 Summer Plate
(Market Rasen, Saturday July 18)

IT’S the racing highlight of the sunny season for many punters on Saturday — the Summer Plate at Market Rasen.

As is likely to happen for pretty much every handicap next jumps season, the Skeltons have the market leader in Kingston Narcissus who hasn’t been with the yard long and is probably capable of a big step forward.

This hasn’t been one of the Skeltons’ targets in the past though with one win from 14 darts fired and 7-2 looks pretty skinny.

At 12-1 with William Hill I prefer the each-way chances of KING ROLY.

He ran a really nice race over course and distance last time when second with no less than 34 lengths back to the third horse home.

All of his five wins have come away from the winter and he’s right at home on what should be rattling fast ground.

LAUREATE CROWN — Newmarket, Friday

HUGO PALMER stepped this three-year-old up to 1m2f for the first time and Oisin Murphy wasn’t helped by him pulling hard in the early stages.

After wasting so much energy, it was a good effort to keep going for third.

A bigger field with a stronger pace will help him settle and he still looks potentially more than a handicapper to me.

SON — York, Friday

QUITE a few horses found trouble in running during this 17-strong handicap but David Allan’s mount looked to cop the worst of it.

He was going nicely before he had to stop riding completely before being hampered again.

His long losing run could be ending soon with a bit more luck.

MORE THUNDER — Ascot, Saturday

I KNOW the William Haggas hope has to be held up but they went far too slow and, while he has a turn of foot, he’s not Pegasus.

He will benefit from returning to a straight mile or a track where there’s a long run-in over 1m2f.

GUADELEVIN — Ascot, Saturday

CHARLIE FELLOWES’ youngster is bred for middle-distances so this was a good effort to finish fourth over 7f in what looks a decent novice
