Sweden‘s former Minister of Finance, 54, launched a scathing attack on Elisabeth Svantesson – the lady currently in that particular job.

In doing so, he used an extraordinary analogy.

Damberg said: “I naturally think of , also known as Spurs. It is one of England‘s most distinguished clubs. A rich club with an enormous stadium. Everything to be considered a top team.”

“Despite this, Tottenham find themselves in crisis, fighting at the bottom of the table.

“Not because they lack resources or advantages, but because they have wasted opportunities.

“Due to making poor choices, general incompetence and short-term thinking, they have lost their direction and stability.”

The club sacked boss Ange Postecoglou last summer just two weeks after winning the UEFA final against – Spurs’ first trophy for 17 years.

Postecoglou’s replacement was sacked last week, which brought to an end his six-month tenure in the job.

Croatian Igor Tudor will now serve as interim until the end of the season.

Damberg added: “The club have been given the name ‘Spursy’ – when you have opportunities but get no results.

“Madame Speaker, that is precisely how the Minister of Finance is handling the Swedish economy.

“The government risks making Sweden ‘Spursy.’ That won’t do. Sweden cannot perform like Tottenham.”

After finishing 17th last season, the hope was that Spurs would improve this term – something that hasn’t happened.

Tottenham are winless in eight in the league, a run which has left them just five points above the relegation zone with league leaders Arsenal next up on Sunday in the North London derby.
