Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has lodged a criminal complaint with the Chief Magistrate Court of Kaduna State against two Facebook users for alleged death threats and defamatory statements made against him.
The case, identified by suit number KMD/685/25, was filed on December 24, 2025, following a series of Facebook posts that Gumi claims falsely depicted him as making threats and inciting violence, thereby jeopardizing his safety and harming his reputation.
Court documents indicate that the defendants, George Udom and Bello Isiaka, allegedly published a Facebook post on December 23, 2025, which attributed to Sheikh Gumi a statement threatening the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, regarding ongoing military actions against bandits.
The post purportedly claimed that the minister’s family in Zangon Kataf, Southern Kaduna, would be attacked if military operations were not ceased.
Sheikh Gumi, represented by his legal counsel, Suleiman Danlami Lere, Esq., denied ever making such statements, labeling the publication as false, malicious, and capable of depicting him as a supporter of terrorism and a threat to national security.
The complainant informed the court that the defendants utilized his name and image to lend credibility to the alleged threat, thus exposing him to potential retaliation from security forces and the public.
The application for criminal summons referenced pertinent sections of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017, under which the defendants could face legal repercussions if the accusations are substantiated.
He emphasized that as a cleric known for promoting peaceful dialogue, the publications were “wicked” and intended to incite hatred and violence against him.
