Many Nigerians throughout the country are observing this year’s Christmas in darkness due to a nationwide reduction in power supply.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which manages the national grid, previously attributed the decline in power supply to issues with the Escravos-Lagos Gas Pipeline in Delta State, owned by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
In a recent update on Wednesday night, NISO indicated that power supply would return to normal soon as the repair work on the gas pipeline by NGPTC is nearing completion.
However, DAILY POST reports that power outages have continued to affect the majority of Nigerians on Christmas Day.
This situation has exacerbated the ongoing challenges in the country's power sector, despite its privatization in November 2013.
Data released by NISO on Wednesday revealed that the eleven electricity distribution companies in Nigeria received 3,272 megawatts of electricity from the National Grid for distribution to over 250 million Nigerians.
This situation has forced distribution companies to implement load shedding and complete outages in some areas under their coverage.
DAILY POST reports that Nigeria’s available electricity supply capacity has remained stagnant at around 3,000 to 5,000 megawatts over the past 12 years.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had promised in 2024 that electricity supply would improve by the end of December 2025.
In an interview discussing this development, the National President of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, Kunle Olubiyo, stated that the Nigerian government cannot create something out of nothing.
“You cannot build something on nothing,” he emphasized.
“If the processes and systems are not properly established, the consequences are what we are experiencing now.
“We did not get it right before and after the privatization of the power sector,” he told DAILY POST.
