The central defender rarely gets among the goals, but he was in the right place at the right time to get on the scoresheet against hosts on the night.

Northampton were chasing an equaliser in the 71st minute when a ball was crossed into the Barnsley penalty area.

A Northampton player met it at the back post to head it back into the middle of the box, where Dyche popped up to flick it past the goalkeeper with a header of his own.

Sky Sports presenter and former star Neil Mellor joked: “ where are you? Your lad has just scored.

It was only Dyche’s second goal of the season, and third in professional , prompting wild celebrations from the Northampton native.

He charged to the corner flag in front of the frustrated home fans, jumping and pumping his fist as his team-mates arrived to congratulate him.

All of this came under pouring rain at Oakwell Stadium, prompting Mellor to make another joke about his father.

Dyche Sr is commonly associated with the idea of being anti ‘woke’ football tropes, with Mellor poking fun at the trend with his commentary on the Northampton man’s outfit.

He said: “He’s got no gloves on, he’s got a short sleeve top on, but he has some silver boots on, so I’m not sure about that one.”

Northampton will need a few more of those if they want to survive their League One relegation battle.

They currently sit in 23rd spot, with only Port Vale having fewer than the Cobblers’ 30 points.

But hope is not lost thanks to the tight nature of the bottom of the table, with just three points separating Northampton in 23rd and Doncaster Rovers in 17th.

He’s not the only Dyche facing a relegation fight, with his father battling to keep in the Premier League over relegation rivals , Leeds United and .
