Is Supermarket Fashion the New High Street?
DEPUTY Fashion Editor Abby McHale shares her thoughts:
Supermarkets have significantly improved their fashion lines. Nowadays, while doing your regular grocery shopping, you can also find a range of stylish, affordable pieces for the whole family.
Tesco recently reported a 0.7 percent increase in sales, attributed to ‘strong growth in clothing,’ while M&S has claimed the title of the top destination for womenswear on the high street.
Asda’s clothing line, George, generated £1.5 million for the supermarket in 2023, with 80 percent of Sainsbury’s clothing sold at full price rather than discounted, and Morrisons’ Nutmeg brand has seen a 2 percent increase in sales over the past year.
So what is driving the success of supermarket fashion?
In addition to being affordable, the quality is commendable, with many items part of initiatives like the Better Cotton Initiative.
They often focus on classic pieces that are designed to last for years.
Moreover, due to their large stock purchases, they can quickly refresh their collections and buy at lower prices because of the volume.
