Nigel Farage has accused the Prime Minister of ‘panicking’
Sir Keir Starmer was in the firing line as voters go to the polls in a crunch by-election
His blistering intervention came as voters start casting their votes in the Gorton and Denton by-election.
The seat is seen as a three-way tie between Labour, Reform UK and the .
Labour’s Andrew Gwynne stood down after winning the Greater seat by 13,000 at the election in 2024.
said: “The Prime Minister is panicking and knows he has broken his promises to the British people.”
His election day message was clear as he declared: “Vote Reform to Ditch Starmer.”
Greater Manchester Mayor attempted to stand in the seat but was blocked by Labour’s ruling executive.
All parties are now trying to maximise the vote by shipping in party supporters to get their support base out.
Polling stations opened at 7am today and will remain open until 10pm tonight.
The results in the tight contest will be in the early hours barring any recounts.
Campaigning has been best by allegations of dirty tricks from parties in the contest.
Labour’s deputy leader said it had been “characterised by misinformation, with dodgy bar charts”.
The campaigning also saw Labour accused the Greens of whipping up hatred in parts of the constituency with a Muslim population.
The Greens targeted Labour by putting out leaflets in Urdu showing Cabinet Minister meeting with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu.
Meanwhile, Starmer made a last minute attack on the “disgusting” Greens as he fights for his political life in a crunch byelection.
The Prime Minister tore into the hard left party saying they would legalise heroin and cocaine.
Sir Keir came out swinging, telling a packed Commons on Wednesday: “The Green Party’s policy isn’t just irresponsible, it’s reprehensible, legalising cocaine, heroin, ketamine and the date rape drug, GHB, a drug which we know is used to spike drinks for women.
“I have to say, as the father of a 17-and-a-half-year-old son, that the idea that the argument is being made by the Greens that when he turns 18, in just a few months, it would be lawful to provide him with heroin and crack cocaine is absolutely disgusting.”
The has thrown hundreds of activists at the constituency in a bid to save their candidate Councillor Angeliki Stogia.
They also sent out a battle bus taking aim at Mr Farage emblazoned with the words: “Remember the £350 million a week for our ? You can’t trust Farage.”
Even former Prime Minister made an unusual intervention calling for voters to back Labour.
The bookies favourite is the Green candidate.
Polling is difficult at a byelection level but one by Opinium suggested the Greens had a slight advantage in the previously safe Labour seat.
Labour won the constituency in 2024 with a majority of 13,413 and more than half the vote.
But Sir Keir’s party has been hammered by scandal and MPs warn his job will be under threat if they lose the election.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Farage said the outcome “is probably too close to call”.
He urged anybody in the community who wants to “get rid of Starmer” to come out and vote.
