The Uruguayan then enjoyed spells at and Valencia.
And he has now been with Argentinian side for nearly three years.
Cavani has since scored 28 goals in 81 games for the Buenos Aires outfit.
But his time in Argentina could soon be up following a major backlash from fans.
Cavani was handed just his first start since September in Friday’s 0-0 draw with Racing Club.
The veteran has been plagued by injuries — picking up THIRTEEN different ones since February 2023 and missing 36 games as a result.
And he found himself booed by Boca fans for a major lack of impact in the game.
Cavani’s effort was so lacklustre that he was then removed entirely from the squad for Monday’s cup game against Gimnasia Chivilcoy.

But now, Boca legend and Argentina World Cup winner Oscar Ruggeri reckons Cavani should save face by retiring entirely from football.
The striker had seemingly announced his permanent exit from the beautiful game in December, although this was later reported to be a hoax despite tributes pouring in from around the world.
Yet Ruggeri feels the time is actually right for Cavani to call it a day.
He said: “Cavani has to stop playing. It’s a sin that this star is insulted in that way (booing) with the immense career he has.
“I don’t know him, we met a few times, but it hurts me to see him. It’s tough to play in Argentina at 40. For me, he’s not making the decision because he wants to keep trying to turn things around and leave.”
It’s not the first time Ruggeri has urged Cavani to quit.
He said in January: “I know Cavani wants to turn the situation around and wants to do well, that he came to Boca and succeeded. But he has to seriously think about what he can do because his body is struggling.
“He plays a little while, maybe misses a goal, and I see some people laughing, others teasing him, and I think he is so great that he has to make the decision himself, not us. He has to make the decision that if his body can’t take it anymore, this is as far as he goes.
“The career he had, what more is it going to give him? It’s saying this is as far as he goes. He is not in debt. He came, tried to do it, but physically he couldn’t.
“But when these things happen, notice that every time he’s about to start, something else happens. These are signals that football is giving him, that you have to make the most difficult decision we football players have, which is to say this is as far as I go.”
