The Oyo State Government has declined requests to raise the retirement age for teachers and civil servants from 60 to 65 years, arguing that such a policy would restrict job opportunities for young graduates in the state.
Previously, the Federal Government approved a similar age extension for healthcare professionals with clinical skills, highlighting the necessity of retaining experienced personnel to bolster healthcare delivery and improve training capacity.
In response, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) advocated for this policy to be applied across all public service sectors.
According to DAILY POST, Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, recently sanctioned a five-year extension for teachers, increasing the retirement age to 65 years and extending the service period to 40 years. Meanwhile, Niger State has announced plans to start implementation on January 1, 2026.
However, during the Second Multidisciplinary International Conference at the Postgraduate College of Lead City University in Ibadan, the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Segun Olayiwola, stated that the state’s Executive Council had thoroughly discussed the issue before deciding against its adoption.
“We examined this matter in five different executive meetings. Initially, the focus was on teachers, but other civil servants later sought inclusion,” Olayiwola clarified.
“Ultimately, we concluded that increasing the retirement age would deprive younger individuals of employment opportunities. In a state like Niger, where the population and number of graduates are smaller, it may be feasible.
“However, in Oyo State, if those set to retire this year were to remain for an additional five years, the 15,000 teachers we recently hired might never have had that chance.”
The commissioner underscored that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration would continue to prioritize youth employment and economic inclusion rather than extending tenure for those currently in service.
