Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has criticized the former governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, stating that he has severely let down the people of Edo.
Oshiomhole made this remark on Sunday in Benin while addressing claims made by the state’s People Democratic Party (PDP) that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s first year in office was a failure.
He noted that Okpebholo inherited a neglected state, emphasizing that Obaseki held numerous groundbreaking ceremonies for projects that produced minimal tangible outcomes.
The senator also took aim at the PDP, labeling it a defunct party that failed to achieve significant results during its time in power.
“I don’t understand why the media continues to quote the PDP, which is a defunct party. I urge journalists to rely on verified facts from the events they cover throughout the state instead of statements lacking credibility,” Oshiomhole stated.
The former governor also pointed out that Okpebholo has initiated impactful projects during his first year, including the ongoing flyover construction at Ramat Park, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in a busy area of the state.
He remarked that the economic benefits of reduced travel time and fuel savings are invaluable.
Oshiomhole further stated that the numerous road projects currently underway across Edo State demonstrate the administration’s dedication to development, dismissing claims that these projects are merely political propaganda.
Regarding education, the former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) accused the previous administration of neglect, leaving many schools with inadequate teachers and deteriorating facilities.
He mentioned that Governor Okpebholo has commenced the rehabilitation of these schools, restoring conducive learning environments and recruiting 5,000 teachers.
He praised the increased funding for higher institutions, noting that Ambrose Alli University and Edo University, Iyamho, are now receiving subventions that have been restored or enhanced by the current administration.
“I must commend Okpebholo for raising AAU’s monthly subvention from N41 million to N500 million, which has helped to resolve long-standing academic disruptions,” he said.
“Edo University, Iyamho, now receives N250 million monthly, representing a strategic investment in higher education,” he added.
