The Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Highness Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, has referred to the Ofala festival as a significant homecoming event for the indigenes and residents of the Anambra commercial hub city.
Achebe made this remark on Monday during an interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST.
He stated, “Ofala Onitsha is a tradition that spans over six centuries. The festival aligns with the harvest season and serves as an annual assessment of progress.
“As part of the festivities, I engage in a 5-day spiritual retreat in solitude, seeking forgiveness for the transgressions of my people and blessings for the upcoming year.
“Ofala has evolved into a global homecoming celebration for Onitsha indigenes and residents, highlighting Onitsha’s rich culture and warmly welcoming the world.”
According to DAILY POST, the Ofala festival is an annual celebration observed by the Igbo people, especially the indigenes of Onitsha, Umueri, Umuoji, and other neighboring communities such as Aguleri, Nnewi, and Ukpo in the Dunukofia Local Government Area.
The festival acts as a rite of renewal for the king and is comparable to the Igue festival in Benin as well as the Ine, Osi, or Ogbanigbe festivals in various mid-West Igbo communities across Nigeria.
