The Nigerian government has announced that it has initiated an investigation into leaked passwords affecting 183 million Google Mail users.

A senior official from the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), who wished to remain anonymous, shared this information with DAILY POST during an interview.

This development follows a recent report that raised concerns over a significant attack that appears to have compromised as many as 183 million email accounts, including Gmail.

The leaked data online includes not only the email accounts but also the passwords believed to be linked to those logins, affecting Nigerian users as well.

This breach could potentially grant hackers access not only to email accounts but also to all other services that rely on Gmail for login.

This renewed alert was issued by ‘Have I Been Pwned’, a website dedicated to tracking data breaches, operated by Troy Hunt.

As reported by the Independent newspaper, the website has monitored 917 compromised websites and over 15 billion accounts.

In response, a trusted source at the NDPC informed DAILY POST that the commission has already commenced an investigation to ascertain the extent of the impact on Nigerian Gmail and other email users.

“We have started an investigation into the data breach involving Gmail and other services. We are actively addressing the situation to determine how it affects Nigerian users,” he stated to DAILY POST.
