The Niger State Government has urged collaboration among governments, development partners, educators, and parents to ensure the successful implementation of adolescent and mental health policies throughout the nation.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Primary Health Care, Dr. Mohammed Gana, made this appeal following a road walk to commemorate the 2025 International Adolescents Health Week, organized by the Ministry in partnership with WHO and UNICEF in Minna, the state capital.

He emphasized the necessity of prioritizing adolescent-friendly health services to guarantee fair access to care and job opportunities for young individuals.

Dr. Gana, who was represented by the Deputy Director of the Community Health Department, Fatima Gogo Muhammad, noted that the event, themed “Thriving Inside And Out: Strengthening Physical And Mental Health,” aimed to educate adolescents about reproductive health, personal responsibility, and the significance of utilizing healthcare services available in their communities.

He stated, “The 2025 International Adolescents Health Week presents an opportunity to highlight the challenges adolescents face and to establish safe spaces where they can express themselves freely, seek assistance, and receive individualized health support from qualified professionals.”

The Adolescent Youth Coordinator, Fatima Ahmed, underscored that adolescence is a pivotal period characterized by both potential and vulnerability, necessitating focused interventions.

Ahmed reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to enhancing youth-friendly health services, particularly in underserved areas.

UNICEF, WHO, and other stakeholders also reiterated their commitment to enhancing the well-being of adolescents and improving access to quality physical and mental health services in the state. They visited the Government Day Science College, Tunga, Minna, where they educated and encouraged students to prioritize mental health as part of their lifelong healthy practices.
