The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit, expired, and substandard products worth over ₦5 billion in Nasarawa State, as part of its efforts to protect Nigerians from hazardous consumer goods.
The items, seized from Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger, and Plateau States, were dismantled and incinerated on Thursday at the Angwan Rere dumpsite in Lafia.
NAFDAC's Director-General, Prof. Christianah Adeyeye, represented by the North-Central Zonal Director, Kenneth Azikiwe, stated that the products were confiscated during routine surveillance and enforcement operations conducted throughout the region.
According to her, the agency's recent destruction initiative aims to ensure that the confiscated items do not “re-enter the market or pose further risks to public health.”
She added that some of the destroyed products were voluntarily submitted by traders who realized they were expired or compromised.
Adeyeye urged Nigerians to stay alert and report individuals or companies involved in the manufacturing or distribution of counterfeit goods.
She cautioned that NAFDAC will continue to intensify its efforts against counterfeiters, emphasizing that the agency's mission to protect public health is non-negotiable.
“We will not rest on our laurels nor leave any stone unturned in ensuring that only safe and effective products reach consumers,” she emphasized.
She further clarified that NAFDAC-regulated products must be stored and distributed according to Good Distribution and Storage Practices to maintain their quality up to the point of sale.
In his remarks, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Security and Safety Matters, Usman Baba, praised NAFDAC for its ongoing market sanitation efforts.
He assured that the state government will continue to support initiatives aimed at ensuring that only genuine and safe products reach residents.
The destroyed items included counterfeit medications, expired food products, adulterated beverages, fake cosmetics, and other harmful consumer goods.
