Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, over his comments regarding the conflict between the Minister and certain military officers allegedly involved in land grabbing.
Buratai stated that the disagreement between Wike and some military personnel over a piece of land reportedly seized in Abuja presents a security threat.
In response to this statement, Olayinka argued that Buratai should be more focused on military officers who are supposed to confront terrorists but are instead being repurposed as what he referred to as "Mai guard" for an unfinished building.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Olayinka questioned how the altercation could be deemed a national security issue.
He stated: “When I read that statement from the former Chief of Army Staff, Buratai, I was surprised that he is not addressing the issue of uniformed personnel who should be at the front lines, specifically in the Chad Basin, facing terrorists, rather than being turned into private guards for uncompleted buildings.”
“What constitutes a security threat to Nigeria? Is it soldiers trained to defend the nation being reassigned as security guards, or 'Mai guard,' as I would put it?”
“That’s exactly what they are doing, guarding an unfinished building. You can protect property when people are residing there, not when it is still under construction.”
“You are securing a construction site instead of being in Borno. You should be safeguarding properties that pose a security threat to Nigerians.”
“What security threat does this situation present to you and me? It does not pose any security threat, yet a former Chief of Army Staff is more concerned about a military officer engaged in an unlawful duty.”
