FANS heading to the Manchester Derby this afternoon have been warned of delays after a major motorway was shut in both directions.
The M60, which surrounds Manchester, closed in both directions within Junction 23 at Ashton-under-Lyne this afternoon following a “police incident”.
Motorists, especially football fans heading to the Manchester Derby this afternoon, have been warned of delays on their route.
While the road has since reopened, residual traffic is expected to continue to cause delays.
A Manchester City spokesperson said: “Due to police incident at M60 J23 near Manchester Road in Ashton under Lyne, a closure is in place on the M60 between J23 – J22 anticlockwise.
“Manchester Road is also closed in both directions.
“Those making journeys to the Etihad Stadium are advised to leave extra travel time and consider rerouting to avoid long delays.”
Junction 23 lies just three miles away from the Etihad Stadium, where Manchester City host rivals Manchester United from 4.30pm.
A National Highways spokesperson said: “The M60 is now open within J23 Ashton-under-Lyne in both directions following a Greater Manchester Police-led Incident.
“Please allow extra time if travelling in the area as delays of 15 mins remain in both directions.”
The nature of the police incident is not yet known.
National Highways said previously: “The M60 is closed within J23 Ashton-under-Lyne in both directions due to a Greater Manchester Police-Led Incident.
“Traffic is being diverted via the exit and entry slip roads. 20 min delays anti-clockwise between J20 and J19.”
