A MAN allegedly sexually assaulted a woman inside a campervan before making a desperate bid to escape from cops by plunging into the sea.

The 21-year-old suspect is accused of launching a terrifying attack on the 44-year-old victim near the mouth of the Rio Andarax in Almería on Sunday.

A passing motorist was left stunned when he heard chilling screams for help at around 5.30pm.

He blasted his car horn repeatedly to raise the alarm – forcing the attacker to stop.

The suspect then fled into nearby bushes, leaving the woman with horrific facial injuries, cuts and bruises.

The driver immediately called and gave a description of the alleged attacker.

Emergency crews raced to the scene and treated the traumatised victim before taking her to Almería Materno Infantil Hospital.

Specialist forensic and gynaecological protocols were activated.

As cops sealed off the area, a manhunt was launched for the suspect.

A man spotted by officers suddenly ran into the sea in an effort to escape police.

He swam around 100 metres from shore as police closed in.

Eyewitnesses watched in shock as he became exhausted and began to sink in the heavy surf.

Five officers then plunged into the water in a daring rescue to save the semi-conscious man.

He was dragged back to shore, stabilised, and arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and causing injury.

The suspect was taken to a medical centre before being transferred into police custody.

The five officers who carried out the dramatic rescue also needed treatment for minor injuries.

A spokesperson for the National Police praised the swift response, saying it prevented the consummation of the assault and saved the suspect’s life.
