It has been almost two months since Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner was released from prison. After closely observing his movements, two significant issues stand out to me.

Firstly, German authorities are grappling with a substantial £1 million dilemma in the form of a smirking predator. Secondly, there is a far more alarming concern.

Brueckner’s self-assurance – along with his potential danger to the public and the McCann investigation – is escalating.

I witnessed the moment the rapist was escorted under armed protection due to fears he might be targeted by vigilantes.

I asked him: “What happened to ?” He simply responded with a chilling grin and remained silent.

Whether he is strutting around or unsettlingly mingling with families at a city festival while wearing a beanie hat and sunglasses, Brueckner does not present himself as a rehabilitated individual.

Instead, he embodies a notorious rapist and suspected child abductor and murderer who is determined to impose his will.

Currently, the prime suspect is living in a tent after being denied access to hotels and hostels, while he plots to obtain a new identity.

Moreover, he is now free to leave Germany and traverse Europe without any oversight.

A shocking court ruling allows him to exit his home country – and the instant he crosses the border, the electronic monitoring ankle tag, intended to keep law enforcement informed about his whereabouts, will cease to function.

The police team that has been tracking him around the clock will be stopped at the border and will have no choice but to let him go free – terrifyingly, on his own terms.

Essentially setting this monster free from his constraints, Brueckner is at liberty to roam the streets with every opportunity to reoffend.

But why is he such an expensive burden for German authorities?

Let's not overlook his extensive criminal record, which includes theft, aggravated theft, sexual abuse, attempted sexual abuse of minors, performing sexual acts in front of children, and possession of indecent images of minors.

However, his most horrific crime was the 2005 torture and rape of a 72-year-old American woman in – the same village from which Maddie disappeared in 2007.

The Sun has also disclosed his fixation on abducting and abusing young children – one of the many reasons he is the primary suspect in the case.

A psychiatrist who evaluated him during his rape trial last year described Christian Brueckner as a “psychopath” and “one of the most dangerous individuals in society.”

All of this indicates he must be monitored at all times.

‘We must drive past his house every hour’

Although he wears an ankle tag, it does not restrict him to a specific area, so whichever city he chooses to reside in must bear the costs of monitoring him closely.

While Brueckner was residing in the northern German town of Neumünster, one officer informed us: “We have been instructed to drive past his house every hour.”

Before relocating to a tent, officers were stationed outside his hotel room in unmarked vehicles.

The German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) is also responsible for surveilling him, working around the clock to keep track of him in case of any repeat offenses, which I believe is highly probable.

Local police monitor his location for his own protection – but the BKA is tasked with tracking his broader movements across Germany. So far, that has involved sightings in Kiel, Neumünster, Braunschweig, and Bremen – with rumors of his desire to travel to Berlin.

For someone who is supposed to be confined to a 3 km radius of his residence (without prior permission), he has already traveled at least 500 miles.

The irony of this (extremely costly) policing dilemma is almost laughable.

After refusing to acknowledge his danger, showing remorse for his crimes, or
