Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has urged residents of Alwasa in Argungu Local Government Area to remain calm and avoid revenge attacks after a violent clash left three people dead.

The governor made the appeal during a visit to the community following the incident, which occurred on Monday evening and heightened tensions between Hausa residents and Fulani youths.

In a statement by Yahaya Sarki, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris said: “The crisis began as a result of a misunderstanding involving Fulani youths who reportedly arrived in Alwasa and engaged in motorcycle stunts, which attracted the disapproval of some local youths.”

It added that “in the course of the altercation, one Hausa resident was allegedly stabbed and later died.”

The situation escalated when some youths reportedly carried out revenge attacks on Fulani residents in nearby areas, resulting in the deaths of two others who were said to have no link to the initial incident. Several people also fled their homes for safety.

Governor Idris described the incident as “painful, unfortunate and completely alien” to the peaceful relationship between communities in the area. He warned against taking the law into one’s own hands.

“As a government, we will not tolerate lawlessness. Anyone found to have taken part in these killings, regardless of tribe or status, will be arrested, investigated and prosecuted. We cannot allow innocent people to suffer for offences they did not commit,” he said.

He urged community and traditional leaders to promote peace and dialogue, while asking affected families to remain patient as the government works to ensure justice.

The governor also directed security agencies to investigate the incident, apprehend those responsible, and restore peace so that displaced residents can safely return home.

Argungu Local Government Chairman Sani Aliyu Gulma confirmed that the violence stemmed from the stabbing incident and expressed regret that innocent people were subsequently affected.
