Is The Chair starring Sandra Oh coming to Netflix in 2021?

It’s been awhile since Netflix took subscribers down the halls of academia outside of a young adult adaptation or a supernatural drama on their original series roster. However, that’s about to change with the Sandra Oh-led dramedy The Chair.

The six-episode series will see Oh in the role of Professor Ji-Yoon Kim, the newly appointed Chair of the English Department at Pembroke University. She’s the first person of color and woman to hold the position in the institution’s 179-year history.

The small university may not be real, but the issues Professor Kim is bound to encounter are certain to take a page from reality, as she manages not only her department but the weight of her new role on campus.

According to the fictional Pembroke Daily (via TVLine), rumors are swirling that enrollment is down at the university and the professor’s appointment is the life line the school is hoping to keep them afloat.

Sounds like Professor Kim is in for an uncomfortable year as the new chair, but when will we be invited on campus to see her work? Here’s what we know about the show’s release date.

The Chair release date

School will be in session Friday, August 27 on Netflix.

The Chair is a half-hour satire series from actress Amanda Peet and the creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Peet will serve as showrunner, writing and executive producing the series.

Not much is known about the show yet, but we suspect we’re in for a fun ride full of academic shenanigans, English professor clichès, and students who pull theses out of thin air to reach for the stars with their “text-based” conclusions.

Get ready, English majors. The Chair seems to be a show made just for our side of the Arts & Humanities brigade.
