Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, asserts that the Nigerian government should not fault its citizens for seeking assistance from abroad if it is unable to safeguard them from the rampant insecurity plaguing the nation.
Lawal made this assertion during an interview on ‘Politics Today’, a program on Channels Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST on Monday.
He emphasized that the government must guarantee the safety of its people if it wishes to prevent them from soliciting help from external sources.
“The government should reassure us that they can provide the peace, security, and prosperity that we seek,” he stated.
“If they are unable to achieve that, they cannot hold any segment of society accountable for seeking assistance elsewhere,” he added.
The former SGF also endorsed US President Donald Trump’s assertion that the killings of Christians in Nigeria constitute genocide.
“It’s genocide; if it’s not genocide, it is a pogrom,” Lawal declared.
He further highlighted that the argument suggesting that more Muslims than Christians have been killed does not justify the ongoing violence.
Lawal’s remarks come in response to the recent threat of military intervention in Nigeria by US President Donald Trump, who referred to the situation as the “Christian genocide” in Africa’s most populous country.
