Senator Suleiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila has called on the Northern Governors Forum and the Northern Nigeria Traditional Leaders Forum to ensure that the proposed state police framework is implemented in a manner that promotes inclusivity and accountability, warning against its potential misuse for political, religious, or social exclusion.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, and the Sultan of Sokoto, who chairs the Northern Nigeria Traditional Leaders Forum, Sen. Sumaila emphasized the need for broad collaboration in shaping a state policing structure that serves all citizens equally.

According to the senator, the initiative must not be allowed to “exacerbate vulnerabilities and sow discord”;; among Nigeria’s diverse communities. Instead, he urged stakeholders to build a framework that prioritizes transparency, trust, and fairness.

“I wholeheartedly support the call for the National Assembly to fast-track the passage of legislation that will establish state police,”;; Sumaila stated. “This initiative is critical to enhancing the security framework in our states, enabling more localized and effective responses to threats.”;;

The senator, who represents Kano South Senatorial District, pledged to contribute actively to legislative efforts towards the establishment of state police, describing the initiative as a crucial step in addressing the region’s security challenges.

He also recognized the strategic role of traditional institutions in the process. “Your closeness to the people and your influence in our communities are invaluable assets in navigating these complexities,”;; he told the traditional rulers.

While acknowledging the grim realities of insecurity in the North, including the loss of lives and destruction of property, Sumaila commended both the Northern Governors Forum and the Traditional Leaders Forum for their ongoing efforts to restore peace in the region.

“The combined concern and commitment of both forums deserve recognition and gratitude,”;; he said. “These challenges are not just statistics; they represent real human suffering.”;;

Senator Sumaila called for unity among all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and secure Northern Nigeria, noting that sustained collaboration is key to overcoming the region’s longstanding security crisis.
