Opposition behind Akume suspension plot – Arewa youths

Published on May 13, 2025 at 05:30 PM

The Arewa Youth Assembly has alleged that recent calls for the suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, are part of a political ploy orchestrated by opposition forces.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the group claimed that the allegations of corruption leveled against Akume are unfounded and intended to discredit both the SGF and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The youth group specifically criticised another organisation, the Arewa United Patriots, describing it as “faceless”;; and lacking any prior public activity. According to the Arewa Youth Assembly, the group emerged solely to spread misinformation and make baseless accusations against prominent government officials.

“The SGF, Senator George Akume, is not involved in any corruption, bribery or money laundering case. These allegations are meant to distract him from his duties and undermine the efforts of the Tinubu administration,”;; the statement read.

They further argued that the timing and nature of the allegations suggest a deliberate campaign to tarnish Akume’s image, whom they described as a key figure in the implementation of the government’s policies.

The Arewa Youth Assembly called on President Tinubu to disregard the call for suspension and urged security agencies to investigate the origins and intent of the group behind the accusations.

They warned that if government officials were suspended based on every unverified claim from unknown groups, it would set a dangerous precedent and destabilize the administration.
