Oh Jung Se Shares Insights Into His Villain Role In “Good Boy,” Real-Life Parallels, And Working With Park Bo Gum

Published on May 12, 2025 at 07:38 AM

JTBC’s “Good Boy”;; has unveiled a sneak peek of Oh Jung Se’s character!

“Good Boy”;; is a comic action drama that follows a group of former national athletes Yoon Dong Joo (Park Bo Gum), Ji Han Na (Kim So Hyun), Kim Jong Hyun (Lee Sang Yi), Go Man Sik (Heo Sung Tae), and Shin Jae Hong (Tae Won Suk)—who become police officers through a special recruitment program. Swapping medals for badges, they take on a world full of corruption, deception, and injustice.

In this drama, Oh Jung Se takes on the role of a compelling villain. Known for his unique, detailed approach to roles, he portrays Min Joo Young, a customs officer who, beneath his calm exterior, secretly takes control of Inseong City. His character’s powerful presence disrupts the lives of the five protagonists—Yoon Dong Joo, Ji Han Na, Kim Jong Hyun, Go Man Sik, and Shin Jae Hong.

Oh Jung Se described his character, Min Joo Young, saying, “Rather than being just a monster in a drama, he is a real-life monster with an ordinary face who has existed in the past, still exists among us today, and will continue to live and breathe around us.”;; He also focused on how to make the already-established villain, Min Joo Young, more engaging. He explained, “After declaring ‘I’m the villain,’ I wanted to peel back the layers, constantly asking, ‘What kind of villain is he?’ and ‘What extreme actions is he capable of?’ My goal was to create a character where these questions continuously emerge,”;; revealing his approach to crafting a complex, multifaceted villain.

Oh Jung Se further explained, “I wanted to show the biggest change with the smallest transformation. I aimed to reveal the true nature of Min Joo Young, the ugliest monster with the most ordinary face.”;; He paid special attention to the character’s appearance, even suggesting that Min Joo Young wear clothes that look neat on the outside but are actually the most expensive. The subtle details in his wardrobe highlight the “ordinariness of evil.”;;

He also pointed to the line, “I don’t really remember,”;; from Min Joo Young, saying, “When I was young, I remember seeing adults lying on television. The monster that hides behind power and wealth to commit crimes still exists among us. We will keep living with these monsters, and we must remember, punish, and keep them in check.”;; This perspective blurs the line between the character and the times. Min Joo Young’s arrival, creating unfamiliar fear with an ordinary face, leaves viewers wondering what lasting impact it will have.

The character who sharply contrasts with Min Joo Young, embodying the monstrosity of reality, is Yoon Dong Joo. The tension between Yoon Dong Joo, a passionate young man driven by justice, and Min Joo Young, who commits evil with a calm demeanor, is set to heighten the drama’s suspense. Oh Jung Se, who hoped Yoon Dong Joo would expose Min Joo Young’s true nature, said, “Min Joo Young might seem like a dry, emotionless character, but his violent side occasionally emerges. I wanted to provoke more of a reaction from Yoon Dong Joo, so I aimed to express that violence as strongly as possible within the limits of the drama.”;;

Speaking about his chemistry with Park Bo Gum, Oh Jung Se said, “What can I say! I just wanted to be caught by him quickly, excitedly, and without hesitation,”;; hinting at their on-screen relationship with his usual playful tone. He added, “He was an actor I could learn a lot from,”;; and stressed that their dynamic goes beyond just a good versus evil struggle. This brief but powerful remark has only increased excitement for the intense showdown between “good boy”;; Yoon Dong Joo and “bad boy”;; Min Joo Young.
