Kano govt arrests goats for alleged eating of tree seedlings

Published on May 17, 2025 at 07:35 AM

The Kano State government has begun arresting goats for eating newly planted tree seedlings under its Urban Renewal Project.

Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday.

He said several goats have already been taken into custody at Zone I of the Nigeria Police Command in Kano.

“As part of our ongoing Urban Renewal Project, we’ve begun planting trees along major roads, starting with Lodge Road and Race Course,”;; Dr. Hashim said.

“This initiative is aimed at reducing heat and air pollution, while also enhancing the beauty of Kano city.”;;

He lamented that the efforts were being threatened by free-roaming goats.

“We’ve received complaints that some residents are allowing their goats to roam freely, and these animals are damaging the young trees we’ve just planted,”;; the commissioner said.

“I want to make it clear: this will not be tolerated. We have already impounded several goats found eating the new trees.”;;

The ministry noted that the goats are currently in police custody as enforcement teams continue to monitor compliance across the city.

Dr. Hashim appealed to residents to take responsibility and support the government’s efforts to green Kano.

“We’re calling on the public to work with us to protect these efforts. Together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Kano,”;; he added.
