Floods: Lagos govt blames high tides from Atlantic Ocean, Lagoon

Published on May 20, 2025 at 03:20 PM

The Lagos State Government has attributed the recent flash floods in parts of the city to elevated tidal levels from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagos Lagoon.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the phenomenon, referred to as “lock up”;;, is a natural occurrence in which high tides temporarily prevent rainwater from flowing into the sea, causing storm water to back up and flood low-lying areas.

“We assure you that once the tide recedes, within 1–2 hours after the rain stops, the floodwater will naturally drain off,”;; Wahab posted on X on Tuesday.

He urged residents to stay calm and avoid panic, noting that emergency response teams and drainage maintenance units are actively monitoring the situation.

Wahab also reiterated the importance of responsible waste disposal, warning that dumping refuse in gutters and drainage channels obstructs water flow and exacerbates flooding.

“Proper waste disposal is a civic responsibility we must all uphold to ensure a flood-resilient Lagos.

“Let’s continue to work together for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment,”;; he said.
