Europa League: Nico Williams responds to Bruno Fernandes’ claims

Published on May 03, 2025 at 04:49 PM

Athletic Club winger, Nico Williams has responded to Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes’ claims after their UEFA Europa League semi-final first leg tie.

Man United defeated the Spanish LaLiga club 3-0 in the Europa League encounter in Spain.

Two goals from Fernandes and a goal from Casemiro gave the Premier League club a first leg advantage ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford.

After the match, Fernandes got into a heated argument with a journalist when he was asked for his opinion on the red card shown to Athletic Club player, Daniel Vivian.

The 30-year-old backed the referee’s decision to award Vivian a red card.

Recall that Vivian was sent off in the first half for a foul on Rasmus Hojlund inside the box, allowing Fernandes to convert the penalty.

But when asked by DAZN about Fernandes’ comments from Thursday night, El Correo reported Williams as saying he was aware of the Portuguese midfielder’s comments but refused to get drawn into any controversies.

“I saw what he said... In the end, everyone is free to think what they want. We are going to play it cool as always, without getting into controversy... and may the best team win,”; Williams said.

Meanwhile, the Europa League semi-final second leg tie between Man United and Athletic Club will take place next Thursday at Old Trafford.
