Published on May 01, 2025 at 03:08 PM

Three key members of the Labour Party have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party in Enugu State.

First to defect was Hon Dennis Agbo, a member of the House of Representatives, representing Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency.

He made the announcement on Wednesday, giving various reasons.

Today, Thursday, Hon Chidi Obetta, a first time Reps member, representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency decamped as well.

Hon. Malachi Okey Onyechi, representing Nsukka West State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly also announced that he has dumped LP.

This was confirmed by Hon Dan Nwomeh, media aide to Governor Peter Mbah.

According to him, “Happening Now at the State PDP Headquarters: Three National and State Assembly Members rejoining PDP from LP.

“They are Rt. Hon. Dennis Agbo, representing Igboeze/Udenu Federal Constituency, Hon. Mark Chidi Obetta, Igboeze South/Nsukka Federal Constituency, and Hon. Malachi Okey Onyechi, Nsukka West State Constituency.”;

Meanwhile, Agbo, two-term federal lawmaker had attributed his decision to the impressive performance of Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, the ongoing internal crisis within the Labour Party, and overwhelming calls from his constituents.

“The performance of the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Dr. Peter Ndubisi Mbah since inauguration has been nothing short of outstanding

“I have had the privilege of supporting and contributing to the administration’s commitment to moving the state forward,”; he said.

Agbo also cited division in the LP and the need to align politically with the state government for the benefit of his constituents as part of his reason.

Agbo said, “In deference to the popular wishes of the highly enterprising people of Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency, I have decided to resign my membership of the Labour Party and return to the People’s Democratic Party.”;

He emphasized that working from the same political platform as Governor Mbah would create the synergy needed for greater development in both the constituency and the state.
