The chairman of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State, Alexander Ombugu, has rejected claims of his suspension, insisting he remains the legitimate leader of the party in the state.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lafia, Ombugu dismissed the reports as baseless, describing those behind the move as individuals falsely parading themselves as members of a caretaker committee.

He maintained that the said group lacks recognition from both the party’s national leadership and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to him, the alleged caretaker committee is attempting to exploit the situation for personal gain, particularly by targeting political aspirants ahead of the party’s primaries.

“Their aim is to create confusion and defraud unsuspecting aspirants seeking to contest under the party’s platform,” Ombugu said.

He further argued that the party’s constitution does not provide for the establishment of a caretaker committee, questioning the legitimacy of the group’s emergence.

Ombugu also raised concerns that those involved have been reaching out to ward and local government party executives, who were duly elected during the party’s congresses, as well as other stakeholders, in a bid to create division within the party.

He warned party members and supporters across the state’s 13 local government areas to avoid any dealings with the group, urging them to remain loyal to the recognized leadership.

Ombugu called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Army, to investigate the activities of the group and protect the public from possible deception.

He added that the party had conducted its ward, local government, and state congresses in line with constitutional provisions, with the processes monitored by INEC and security agencies.

“We followed due process, submitted the names of elected officials, and received official acknowledgment from INEC,” he stated.

Despite the internal dispute, Ombugu expressed confidence that the Labour Party would overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He also reaffirmed the composition of the state executive, listing himself as chairman, alongside other officials including Bulus Sakks (Secretary), Esther Arishi (Treasurer), and Isiaka Okpu (Financial Secretary), among others.
