HS2 trains may be slowed down in a bid to stop the £100billion project spiralling further out of control.

Ministers are looking at cutting speeds on the London to Birmingham route from a planned 224mph as delays and costs rise.

HS2 boss Mark Wild is expected to confirm the line will miss its 2033 deadline and be well over budget — though that update has been delayed until after May’s .

The railway was designed for trains to go faster than any conventional line in the world.

But officials say it left the project difficult to deliver.

Testing trains at this speed would mean sending them abroad.

Building a test track would take years, at huge costs.

UK trains can currently run at 125mph top speed.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is looking at ways to
get the railway open sooner and at lower cost for taxpayers.

An inside source said: “As we reset the project, we will take every opportunity to claw as much time and taxpayers’ money back as possible, as we deliver this railway line as fast as possible.”
