BRITS heading to Gibraltar will soon have to show passports to Spanish border guards under a new Labour Brexit deal.

Under the fresh treaty, will remain British and won’t join the passport-free Schengen zone — but officers will be allowed to carry out border checks.

They will have powers to arrest Brits, and to search and interview travellers where they believe there is a security risk.

The new system is also meant to pave the way for the 1.2km fence on the Gibraltar-Spain border to be removed.

The demanded that “operational overreach” from Spanish police must be avoided.

Shadow Foreign Minister Wendy Morton warned that sovereignty is “not simply about words, it is about how arrangements operate in practice”.

She told the Commons: “There are serious questions about the operation of the border and dual checks, the role of Spanish authorities at the airport, customs and taxation arrangements.”
