FIREFIGHTERS have rushed to a burning block of flats in a busy city hotspot.

The London Fire Brigade sent 60 firefighters and eight engines to a blaze in the middle of London and warned of “significant traffic disruption” in the area.

The cause of the fire that burnt two flats and a roof on Battersea Park Road in Battersea is under .

The London Fire Brigade said: “The fire has now been brought under control by firefighters but crews will remain on scene over the coming hours to fully extinguish the fire and to dampen down.

“Battersea Park Road remains closed between the junctions of Queenstown Road and Havelock Terrace.

“The incident is causing significant traffic disruption and motorists are advised to continue to avoid the area whilst firefighters remain on scene.”

The fire was reported to the Fire Brigade at 2:28pm on February 15, which sent crews from Clapham, Battersea, Lambeth, Brixton, and other surrounding fire stations.

Around 60 firefighters and eight fire engines arrived at the building on Battersea Park Road in Battersea.

LFB said that the fire affected a three-storey building with commercial properties on the ground floor and flats above it.

People in the area had been advised to keep their windows and doors shut due to the travelling from the burning building.

There were no reports of injuries and firefighters were able to put out the fire by 3:55pm using a 32-metre long ladder from Clapham Fire Station.

Emergency services closed Battersea Park Road between the junctions of Queenstown Road and Havelock Terrace.

LFB said the cause of the fire was not known and an investigation into the incident had been launched.

They said in a statement: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a building fire on Battersea Park Road in Battersea.

“The fire has been affecting a three-storey building with commercial on the ground floor and flats above. Two flats on the second floor, along with part of the roof of the building, were alight.

“The fire has now been brought under control by firefighters but crews will remain on scene over the coming hours to fully extinguish the fire and to dampen down.

“There have been no reports of any injuries at this time. People in the area were advised to keep their windows and doors closed at the height of the fire due to smoke travelling from the .

“Battersea Park Road remains closed between the junctions of Queenstown Road and Havelock Terrace. The incident is causing significant traffic disruption and are advised to continue to avoid the area whilst firefighters remain on scene.

“The Brigade received the first of 17 calls about the fire at 1428 and Control mobilised crews from Clapham, Battersea, Lambeth, Brixton and surrounding fire stations to the scene.

“A 32-metre turntable ladder from Clapham Fire Station has also been in attendance and used as a water tower to help extinguish the fire from above. The fire was brought under control by 1555. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
